An Urban Playground on Bali’s Idyllic Coast

This project is a vibrant reimagining of Bali’s island spirit, where coastal rhythms flow into tropical abundance and cultural depth. Guided by studio ara’s vision, the renovation unfolds as a multi-faceted experience of nature, color, and artful detail… an environment that celebrates curiosity and connection in equal measure.

Concept to Construction: Renovation

The Brief

How would studio ara distill the sensory richness of Bali into a cohesive design language? The challenge was to craft a space that both reflects the island’s natural beauty and stands as a haven for contemporary living. Situated along Kuta’s coast, the design needed to merge the raw openness of sea and sky with bespoke interiors that encourage both play and pause, striking a balance between modern lifestyle needs and local resonance, a seamless transition from rooftop soirées to poolside lounging.

The Concept

Guided by a palette of blue, green, and yellow, the interiors echo Bali’s luminous waters, verdant foliage, and generous sunlight. The spatial language layers printed wallpapers and delicate butterfly motifs as a nod to the island’s natural poetry, while geometric tiles and jewel-toned lamps introduce structure, rhythm, and vibrancy. This interplay of organic references and bold detailing reflects the spirit of Bali itself. Serene yet electric, contemplative yet celebratory, a design that embodies the balance of working hard and playing hard.

The Highlight

A key feature of this project lies in its bold  interplay of colour, surface and light. Custom wallpapers transform walls into canvases of flora and fauna, complemented by vibrant, butterfly-laden artworks created in collaboration with contemporary artist Punk Me Tender, whose signature style fuses street art energy with fine art techniques. Bespoke furniture, fixtures, and lighting create pockets of atmosphere, shifting mood as day turns to night.

The Result

The completed project captures the essence of Bali’s coastal spirit and Kuta’s vibrant tourist appeal, while embedding studio ara’s ethos of culture and curiosity. Long known as a destination for adventurous young travellers, Kuta now finds a more elevated expression in Mamaka by Ovolo. Here, spaces like Street 32 and Kuta Social Club act as dynamic social hubs, connecting urban travellers and digital nomads with Bali’s coastal energy and contemporary lifestyle. The result is a retreat that is indulgent yet natural, where the everyday seamlessly balances with the extraordinary.

“Designing here meant channeling Bali’s iconic coast: its colours, its spirit, its rhythm. What we have done here is build a space for both work and play.”
