Studio ara set out to create interiors that reflect Padma’s philosophy of heritage-inspired hospitality, while responding to the unique context of Semarang. A major port during the Dutch colonial era in Indonesia, Semarang still carries many striking remnants of Dutch architectural heritage.
Today, Semarang is a meeting point of tradition and modernity, where historic architecture coexists with rapid urban growth, making it a fitting backdrop for Padma’s vision. As a brand, Padma has built its reputation in Indonesia on weaving cultural authenticity with contemporary luxury, and this project continues that legacy by creating spaces that feel culturally rooted, globally relevant, and distinctly Padma.
The design philosophy threads together Semarang’s layered heritage with vibrant, contemporary sensibilities. Interior spaces frame views of the tropical landscape, blurring boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Materiality plays a central role, with traditional weaving patterns reinterpreted in modern applications, artisanal ceramics crafted into lighting, and bespoke metalwork anchoring architectural features. Batik patterns surface in textile applications, while the visual language of Wayang shadow puppets are abstracted into wall panels and screens. Every detail celebrates local craft while offering a refined, present day aesthetic, creating an environment that feels at once timeless and progressive.
